“So far, the Democrats’ education reform agenda has been focused on sexual
education and high school sports mascots,” said Davis. “The Democrats have offered no solutions to the important challenges facing our state’s education system.”
Davis pointed out the state budget was the only action taken by the Legislature with any significant impact upon K-12 schools. The state budget, which Davis opposed, included an over $530 million cut in state aid to school districts, the spending of one-time federal stimulus money for ongoing expenses, and the elimination of the Qualified Economic Offer (QEO), which has played a large role in controlling costs for school budgets.
“The Democrats’ action will lead to higher property taxes for Wisconsin families and less funding for the classroom,” Davis explained.
On the other hand, Assembly Republicans have announced a comprehensive package of legislation designed to reform education and protect taxpayers.
“Local school boards are facing some very tough decisions due to harmful provisions included in the state budget last year,” stated Davis. “We must take a serious look at K-12 education and enact meaningful reforms because taxpayers cannot afford the increased tax burden.”
Davis said his education reform agenda focuses on:
- Creating a sustainable school finance system
- Rewarding our best teachers
- Modernizing Wisconsin’s student assessment system
- Increasing choices for students and parents
