Creating Jobs & Economic Growth
Our state has been hit hard by the economic recession, with over 250,000 Wisconsinites out of work. In fact, Wisconsin lost 26,100 jobs in December 2009 alone, bringing the total to 163,000 jobs lost over the last 12 months. We all know someone - a friend, relative, or neighbor - that has lost a job through no fault of their own. Therefore, I believe it must be the top priority of your state government to partner with businesses to improve Wisconsin’s economic and job creation climate.
Earlier this year, the state budget increased government spending by 6%, which resulted in billions in tax increases. I opposed the budget because families and small businesses across the state cannot afford to send so much of their hard earned money to the government in Madison. Simply expanding the size of government and increasing taxes will not put Wisconsin’s economy on the road to recovery.
Part of the solution must include three core principles: reducing the tax burden, lessening burdensome regulations, and improving our litigation environment. Government must get out of the way and give businesses the tools they need to create jobs. After all, small businesses are the economic engine of our state, and it is the small business owners across Wisconsin who will lead us out of this recession.
Specifically, Republicans in the State Assembly have developed and introduced a jobs-focused agenda known as the WI Jobs NOW Agenda. The legislation and policies in this package focus on making changes that would improve the business and job creation climate in our state now, instead of years down the road. These bills range from moving up the Jobs Tax Credit so that it can be utilized by businesses now, to increasing small businesses’ flexibility, which would allow them to hire more employees. By targeting job-killing tax increases for elimination, removing red tape, and pushing up the effective date of tax credits, we can achieve the goal of keeping jobs in Wisconsin and rebuilding our economy for the 21st century.
Below are just a few bills I believe should be passed immediately to help spur job creation and economic development:
Job Tax Credit NOW (2009 AB 477)
Recruit & Retain Jobs NOW (2009 AB 476)
Small Business Flexibility Act (2009 AB 184)
Eliminate the Anti-Job Combined Reporting Tax (2009 AB 478)
